Up, Up and Away Club Scrap Blog Hop!

Well, well . . . seems that my blogging focus has been over at Club Scrap Creates these days! Had to dust off the cobwebs over here. Just so 'ya know, I'm still crafting efficiently!

Special thanks to my favorite crafty Dutch pal, Hetty Sanders, for helping us launch the blog hop.

Without further ado, I've had a prototype of this project on my desk since the end of December. Cute, isn't it?

I thought it might be fun to do with the Up, Up and Away Unmounted FontArt.

You could make this in a pinch if you were desperate for a last-minute gift. I always seem to be in that situation. You?

So, easy steps. I'm not even going to sketch this out for you. You'll be fine. But I've got a couple of good assembly tips for 'ya.

1. Start with a 12x12" sheet of Up, Up & Away printed paper. Hold it on edge to determine the grain direction. Which way does it dip the deepest?

Can you see it? The paper is more, um, "dippy" in the first photo. After rotating the paper and holding it on a neighboring edge, it's more stiff and straight.

Drop the paper into the trimmer with the dip running left to right. Trim at 5.5". So, that's a really verbose way of saying, "Trim a 12x12 to 5.5x12." You can get two out of each 12x12 by trimming at 11 and 5.5".  (The technical name for this cut would be grain short.)

2. Use your favorite tool to score the paper vertically at 1/2, 1-3/4, 3 and 4-1/4". Score horizontally at 1.5 and 10.5".

3. It will be difficult to see the score lines if you're using a printed paper. Make a pencil mark to indicate the location of the intersecting score lines to that you can see where to place stamped images.

4. Mount that awesome border stamp onto a CS Grid Ruler. Check to make sure it's properly aligned and stamp within a marked area with Fuchsia ink.

5. If you're still in the mood, keep stamping! I added a second border stamped in Lagoon ink, and some balloons in Orchid ink. No need to stamp onto the 1/2" scored area. It will be tucked away.

6. Ready for some freestyle cutting? Use a scissors to remove the two 1/2 x 1-1/2" corners created by the intersecting score lines. Then cut along the three remaining long score lines from the outside edges to the intersecting score. This will create three tabs.

7. Next, snip away about half of the first and third tabs on each side.

9. Punch a hole into the four remaining long tabs.

10. Place the paper right side up on your work surface, and add a strip of adhesive to the narrow 1/2" flap along the outer edge.

11. Rather than try to form the box at this point, simply turn the paper over and fold up the 1/2" tab with the adhesive exposed. Then, simply fold the paper in half so that the edges line up.

12. Form the shape of the box.

13. Tuck in the short tabs. Squeeze together the long tabs.

14. This was the part where I thought it would be more efficient to just punch both holes at the same time at this stage of the game rather than back at step 9. And efficiency is what I'm all about. Except this time the efficiency is hindsight. So I took a fake picture of the step that never occurred.

15. Close the tabs with a ribbon. Or a twist tie. Or whatever else you can think of. But first, put something fun inside.

Leave a comment below with an idea of what you might put inside this adorable little box, and I'll enter your name in a drawing to get a prize sent to you! The space inside the box is roughly 1.25" square by 9" long. I have lots of ideas, but I'm curious to know what you'd do!!!

Thanks for hopping along with us. Your next stop is at Craft Chaos!

  3. What a fun wrapper for almost anything! I can see some Dutch chocolates inside, but also pens or brushes. A real cool project, Tricia!

  4. Great packaging idea, Tricia! Could be filled with craft tools (craft knife, gelatos, pencils, etc. or candy (or celery & bacon for us low-carbers!). But whatever you put inside, it's just so stinkin' cute! Thanks for sharing!

  5. Tricia, what fun project. I could definitely see some fun items being put into this unique box! Thanks for the great tutorial too!

  6. Dove Promises...yep...I'd fill 'er to the brim with 'em. (Yes, I did measure them to make sure they would fit, lol.) And like you said, great for those "last minute" gifts that seem to crop up when you least expect it.

  7. I think Hershey Kisses would be a perfect pick me up to have inside as a cute thinking of you gift, thanks for the idea Trisha!

  8. As a pen-addict, I'd love to see some pens in that little container!!!! Oh yeah chocolate would work. Dark chocolate please :) Such a cute project. Oh - just hit me, for the nieces and nephews that are at the age where cash is the primo gift, some cash rolled up around a pen or pencil! Or a gift certificate (of course the CARDS wouldn't work but some people still use paper certificates.

  9. Since I will get two boxes out of one sheet of paper, I will fill with 2 different things. I think I'm going to put one of those quickie glue pens and a clear glitter pen in one for a crafting friend. And like everyone else suggested this box would be great for filling with candy. I'm thinking about jelly beans.

  10. Actually I'm always looking for cute ways to give cash to the nieces and nephews without just putting it in cards or gift cards so this is perfect!

  11. I know it sounds silly, but I need to send a "certificate" to a friend -- I think I will make this then scroll it up inside! Great idea. Love it!

  12. Great little project! Lots of fun things - love all the candy suggestions add peanut butter cups, caramels, and m&ms - all favorites of my nieces and nephews (with a surprise twenty dollar bill or movie ticket for those every needy college students to go to a movie - up, up and away to the movies). Trail mix tuck it into the pack of my favorite day hiker! I am definitely going to do a dog treat one as well - pencil size chew sticks they like or little snacks - perfect prizes for a fun match.

  13. well, candy is always a popular thing. Or a rolled up smaller poster, or a hand-made 'coupon' for a treat or an activity in the future, or some foam popcorn things with some earrings or something else smaller, or a letter, an honest to goodness letter telling the recipient why they are special to you. Or maybe an 'on the day you were born' story.

  14. Cool idea!! As so many others I can think of lots of great things to fill it with... The first thing that popped into my mind was Starburst because the package mimics the candy wrapper perfectly. But you could also fill it with a small envelope filled with blended tea, a cinnamon stick and a honey straw or a baggie filled with cocoa mix and the freeze dried marshmallows. Maybe a pen, postcard and stamps rolled up into a neat little scroll tied with a ribbon; an assortment of vintage ephemera rolled up in a vintage hankie; a hand beaded necklace & bracelet rolled & wrapped in tissue paper... The ideas are just endless!

  15. I was thinking Hershey's kisses but if you are doing a crafty secret sister thing maybe some fabulous pens or some spray inks or glue pens, bone folder, and a pack of dental floss threaders (great fo getting fiber through little holes) and some fibers.

  16. Love it Tricia! First thing I thought of was chocolates but am now thinking crafting supplies like markers, pencils, pens, etc. I personally would like to receive this with a few watercolor pencils tucked inside!

  21. What a cute box and I'm sure very simple once you get the hang of it. The first thing I thought of when I saw the shape was that it looks like a sleeve of saltines but that would be really boring. I would probably make these for everyone as party favors and fill them with fancy chocolate dipped pretzel rods.

  22. Delightful little box! Anyone would love to receive this even if its empty!
    Thanks for the directions.

  28. Loving the Starburst idea! Or pencils, for those of us on a continual diet!

  29. I could see so many fun items going into this box- candy : ) which would have to be chocolate.....or jewelry, or sewing supplies....embroidery...Love your visual tutorial!

  30. what a neat little gift box. The first thing I thought of was colored pencils or watercolor pencils for a crafty friend. Ofcourse candy is always a welcome gift!

  31. My favorite confection is DARK chocolate-covered espresso beans. I would definitely fill it with those and attach a note that if the recipient didn't like them, I would gladly take them off their hands and exchange them...maybe for some malted milk balls. ;-)

  32. Fun little pencil box. Or, you can just fill mine with chocolates. Love this kit.

  37. Rolos, Mentos, or Starburst candies with a gift certificate rolled around it.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Oh do I love that font! The hot air balloons with the fancy alpha looks fabulous! As for that box I would fill it with M&M's because who doesn't love M&M's?!! Or, I could also always tuck in a $5.00 bill along with the candy to make my niece and nephews very happy!

  39. I recently got a Scor-Board so this would be a great project to start with! Love the fun shape of this box and the fact that it can be customized for any theme! I would fill it with rolled sticker strips for my grand-daughter and maybe candies that don't melt, like Skittles!

  40. So cute! The first thing I thought of was a toblerone bar!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Very cute - and hey, with Easter coming up - how about Jelly Beans!!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Love the gift box, and I love candy BUT...I love jewelry more so I would have to go with a beautiful necklace or bracelet. The second would have to have dog treats...or a name plaque for a new grad in their first desk job...or Copic markers, or...

Gosh - I guess I need to make about a dozen of these! Thanks for the idea! Melanie803 @ aol dot com.

  43. Tricia, You are a life saver. I'm always late with gifts and my wrapping leaves much to be desired! I am thinking 3yo boy gifts.
So how about a Pez candy dispenser or Organic Raisins(mom preferred). Great Hop ! Thanx

  44. I also thought of Hersey's Kisses right away, it would hold quite a few of them for sure (I got to see this cool nifty box this morning in Tricia's office, it really is as cool as it looks)!

  45. Cute! Reese's Mini cups would be fabulous! Or you could stuff it with gorgeous ribbons or other fun fibers. :)

  46. Hmmmmm... Chocolate covered pretzel sticks would fit nicely into the box, maybe two or three depending upon the finished size, which is hard to tell from the photo but I'll need to make one of this cute boxes. My DGSs would love one full of their favorite color, green. LOL
